PASAY CITY, November 9, 2024 – The Construction Manpower Development Foundation (CMDF), in partnership with the Philippine Constructors Association (PCA), Bentley Education, and PHILCONSTRUCT Exhibitions & Conferences Corporation (PECC), celebrated the successful conclusion of the Skills Olympics 2024 with an awarding ceremony held during PHILCONSTRUCT Manila. This year’s event, themed “Railway and Tunnel Design Competition,” showcased some of the nation’s most promising engineering students, highlighting their talents in advanced infrastructure design and digital modeling.
Claiming the competition’s highest honor, Southern Leyte State University’s PICE SLSU Rail BlaCErs earned the Grand Championship title with their outstanding design and technical innovation. Technological University of the Philippines Cavite’s Gray Builders v 3.0 secured the 1st Runner-Up spot, demonstrating inventive solutions and precision, while Batangas State University TNEU Alangilan’s Spartan Railcraft achieved 2nd Runner-Up with a remarkable display of creativity and skill. National University Baliwag’s Bulldog Blueprint Express took home the 3rd Runner-Up title with an impressive performance.
This two-phase competition, featuring a Modeling Phase and a Methods Phase, brought real-world railway engineering and design challenges to life. The event unfolded across PHILCONSTRUCT’s regional conventions, starting with registration at PHILCONSTRUCT Luzon, followed by the Modeling Phase at PHILCONSTRUCT Visayas and the Methods Phase at PHILCONSTRUCT Mindanao. Participants used Bentley Systems’ OpenRails and Synchro 4D software to design a conceptual railway for a challenging terrain in Leyte.
The timing of the Skills Olympics aligns with the Philippine government’s infrastructure focus under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s “Build Better More” program. The Department of Transportation’s budget increase, from PHP 106 billion in 2023 to PHP 214.3 billion in 2024—with over 76% allocated to railway projects—illustrates the government’s commitment to building up transportation infrastructure. Programs like the Skills Olympics equip future engineers with the skills needed to meet these growing demands in the country’s infrastructure and transportation sectors.
This year’s Skills Olympics has underscored the talent, dedication, and potential of a new generation of engineers, setting a high benchmark for future competitions. Congratulations to all participants, and here’s to a promising future for the Philippine construction industry.
